Batteries Directive prescribes consistent collection and recycling quotas
Automotive, industrial and machine batteries contain heavy metals which, when being disposed, can impact the environment. Of these, lead, cadmium and mercury are considered as the most harmful. The EU Directive 2006/66/EC on batteries and accumulators prescribes ceilings for these dangerous substances. Besides, collection and recycling quotas for used batteries and used accumulators are fixed. Manufacturers and importers must also establish collection systems in all EU member states.
