First Implementing Measures for standby/off mode power consumption and simple set top boxes have become effective

The European commission has passed the first Implementing Measures (IM): The regulation concerning the standby and off mode power consumption of electrical and electronic household and office equipment – Commission Regulation (EC) No 1275/2008 – has become effective in all EU member states on January 7, 2009. This IM fixes limits for power consumption in standby and off modes which become obligatory in two steps (first step: January 7, 2010, second step: January 7, 2013).

Another regulation – Commission Regulation (EC) No 107/2009 – concerns simple set top boxes and has become effective on February 25, 2009. It regulates energy consumption by corresponding limits which become obligatory on February 25, 2010 respectively February 25, 2013. According to the pre-study the annual power consumption of set top boxes will increase in Europe up to 14 TWh in 2014 (compared to 6 TWh in 2010). Due to the new limits, energy saving of 9 TWh could be realized in 2014.
