Ecodesign Directive improves energy efficiency of energy-using and energy-related products

The Ecodesign Directive 2009/125/EC aims at designing energy-using and energy-related products more eco-friendly and improving for example their energy efficency. The actual ecodesign requirements are defined by Implementing Measures of the EU Commission. The Directive itself establishes a legal framework. It regulates the whole lifecycle of a product, from raw material selection, manufacturing, packaging, transport and distribution to installation and maintenance, use and end-of-life. Energy efficiency is an important aspect and particularly relevant in the utilization phase. In Germany, the Ecodesign Directive was implemented into national law by the “Energiebetriebene-Produkte-Gesetz (EBPG) of February 27, 2008.
